Yes, first impressions always do make a difference. Unfortunately in our society (whether we like it or not) men with long hair often get associated with drugs, loafers, derelicts and people with low self-esteem.
Unless you're some movie or pop star, or you have your hair tied back and slicked and are wearing Georgio Armani - you're likely going to give off that impression. A haircut can do wonders - but that's only the start. For making friends the rest depends on social skills - and yes you'll be more approachable with a cleaner cut look - no question. Also think about the sort of friends YOU want to attract - are they the cleaner cut type? If so - you need to become the sort of people you want to attract - not just looking the part - but also allowing people to get to know you. Sometimes stupid things like hair and appearance can be a stumbling block for people to take more interest in who you are. It's sad but true.

You don't HAVE to I suppose. But it makes success quite a bit easier. Having a neat, groomed appearance is the only way to give a good 1st impression. It shows that you're conscientous enough to take care of yourself. Being more pleasant to the eye, (Or, less unpleasant to look at ) means that one will be more likely to want you around.
Dressing up for an interview is also a neccessity. Depending on the job, it may be the required daily look. Even if not, the interviewer's not fooled. They know that may not be your regular "look" but not dressing up for the the interview shows that you don't take the job serious.

People usually can't tell much about someone in a 30 minute interview. But they can get a pretty good idea through what they see during that first encounter. So it's always a good idea to dress neat and maintain a good external appearance to leave a lasting impression. Besides, even if the world isn't so shallow (which I doubt), it's good practice to try and look as good as possible within your achievable means :-)

personality has a lot to do with it, but yes, a clean and upkept appearence will help you in getting that job, because honeslty, when it comes down to two equally qualified canidates, the one who will look better in representing the company will get the job. as far as the clothes go, you may need to do some shopping, depending on the job and what kind of attire they require employees to wear, but you shouldn't have to change who you are to be accepted and to have friends, unless you want to totally make yourself over. the dentist idea is not a bad one, actually, everyone's supposed to go to the dentist atleast once every six months.
as long as you maintain a clean apearance, regardless of the style, and stay true to who you are as a person, you should be fine

It will definitely help with seeking employment. Unfortunately it is human nature to judge by first appearances. But hopefully people are willing to look beyond that as well. Being well-groomed, and taking care of yourself are signs that you generally care what others think, sometimes people are turned off if they percieve a person doesn't care at all about what others think.
Best of luck with job hunting, and making friends.

That would depend on your definition of success, and what kind of job and friends you want to have. If you can be happy with people who are very similar to you, that's great. If you can find a job that you like without having to drastically change your appearance, that's great to. We all have to change and sacrifice something to get what we want. It depends on how bad we want it, and what we are willing to do to get it.
