I don't think it makes a difference which country you visit. Language isn't typically a problem these days as English is widely spoken and if you arm yourself with a few key words and phrases in the local language - you'll earn lots of respect from the locals. If it is your first trip I assume you will be visiting the bigger cities and you will encounter many a "turistas". All these countries use the Euro currency - so no difference there. Personally, I would probably choose Italy (if I only had to choose one!). Reason being - it is the top tourist destination thanks to the recnet movies and books publisizing this wonderful destination. Italy will provide you with lots of big city excitement (art, architecture, dining, shopping) and you can easily get off the beaten path and visit the countryside (Tuscany, Cinque Terre).

A good itinerary for your first trip is:

Rome
Florence (rent a car and cruise around Tuscany if you aren't afrain of driving. If you are - take a day trip to the countryside)
Venice
Cinqueterre (base yourself in Monterosso and walk to all 5-towns)
Fly out of Milan

You might want to check out the Italian rail passes for travel between the cities. Compare point to point to the pass and see what is the best deal. Train travel is the best way to travel in Europe and lots of fun! http://www.raileurope.com/us/rail/passes/trenitalia_pass.htm

If you were to choose France or Spain - you'd have a great time as well. Each country has it's own "flavor" and on your first trip (and successive trips) you will find yourself in awe of everything - like a kid in a candy shop. Just do your homework before you go and keep yourself open to new experiences while you are there.

Happy Travels!

Speaking from experience, as a former first time traveller to Spain and France, but not to Italy, I can honestly say that Spain would be the best place to go. I have never been to Italy so I cannot give you any information about that. Even though there is a language barrier, they are not rude like the French. Spain is a beautiful country, you will really enjoy it.

with a Eurorail Pass you could do all three!

in any event depends on your preferences.

- cost wise: Spain would be cheaper followed by Italy, then France
- stuff to see wise : would have to say Italy has the most, Rome, Venice and Firenze could take a lifetime to enjoy not tom mention Tuscany and Genoa - there is a lot to see.
- Paris is beautiful but probably a bit too expensive if you are on a budget.

Depends on the time you've got. France is beautiful, but more spread out. Definatley amazing though. You could see more places in less time in Italy, Florence, Rome, Milan, Pompei, are all worth the trip! Don't miss the vatican... you know, you should go to Italy!

It depends on what your interests are and which parts of each country you are planning to visit. If you simply are looking for a "European" experience in one city, then Paris is probably the best place to start. Paris features old and new world architecture, a variety of museums and food from around the world. If you are looking for a region to visit, I recommend Tuscany in Italy, particularly if you like wine. Rome has a lot of character and features some fantastic historical sites as well as world class museums. Madrid and Barcelona are both very beautiful cities with several historical sites and active night life. The best choice depends on your personal preferences.

If you must to choose only one, that's for sure it must be Italy. But,after seeing Italy no other country will be more beautiful. So ,if you can,I suggest to visit all in that order:Spain,France ans the last but not the least Italy.

France. But if you happen to go to Italy, specifically Rome, be careful of pickpockets.
