The main symptom of this disorder is the excessive, unreasonable desire to avoid the feared subject. When the fear is beyond one's control, or if the fear is interfering with daily life, then a diagnosis under one of the anxiety disorders can be made
Some therapists use virtual reality or imagery exercise to desensitize patients to the feared entity. These are parts of systematic desensitization therapy.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be beneficial. Cognitive behavioral therapy lets the patient understand the cycle of negative thought patterns, and ways to change these thought patterns. CBT may be conducted in a group setting. Gradual desensitization treatment and CBT are often successful, provided the patient is willing to endure some discomfort and to make a continuous effort over a long period of time.

Anti-anxiety or anti-depression medications can be of assistance in many cases. Benzodiazepines could be prescribed for short-term use.

These treatment options are not mutually exclusive. Often a therapist will suggest multiple treatments.

I have a problem with heights. It is very difficult for me to climb ladders and i cannot jump into a swimming pool though I am an okay swimmer.
I also have a problem with crowds and can become rapidly panicky in an enclosed space with too many people even if I know each person individually. for this reason, i don't drink when I go out, as sober I can suppress the fear, but with alcohol I go into a blind panic.

Hi . . . I don't mind heights. I don't even mind falling. But it's the fear of landing after a fall that gets me!

I used to have a phobia of injection needles when I was younger - and then I was subjected to a lot of injections as I was growing up and this soon dwindled away.

I guess we are conditioned to fear certain things by the media and what we read and see as children and this can manifest as irrational fears or phobias in some people's personalities.

The top 10 phobias [ref 1.] are:

01. ARACHNOPHOBIA: Fear of spiders.
02. SOCIOPHOBIA: Fear of people or social situations.
03. AEROPHOBIA: Fear of flying.
04. AGORAPHOBIA: Fear of open spaces.
05. CLAUSTROPHOBIA: Fear of confined spaces.
06. EMETOPHOBIA: Fear of vomiting.
07. ACROPHOBIA: Fear of heights.
08. CANCERPHOBIA: Fear of cancer.
09. BRONTOPHOBIA: Fear of thunder and lightning.
10. NECROPHOBIA: Fear of death.

Please see ref 2 for an interesting discussion on the origins of fear.

Yes, I have social phobia - I avoid social situations such as parties, outings - well, you get the general idea - groups of people getting together for whatever reason where I will have to make small talk and try to fit in and I am sure that I will be a nervous wreck.

I'm terrified of flying insects, particularly moths, butterflies, and flies. Actually less bothered by wasps and bees. I can't stand the thought of them touching me, and I get very upset if my bf touches one, e.g accidentally swatting it away from me. I have this thing that flies are trying to get inside you, because that's where the faeces is and that's what they wanna eat. That and I saw a guinea pig that exploded due to maggots inside it (blown) one time when I was a kid and I'm certain it could happen to people. Moths and butterflies - they fly RIGHT at you! I think it's the fluttering thing that creeps me out/disgusts me most.

I'm also petrified of fire. I need the candle extinguishing in restaurants before I sit at a table or I'm sure my bf/family/friend will get set on fire, and I wouldn't be able to do anything. I have to keep checking all appliances before bed, and you can't light candles or flick a lighter near me - it terrifies me. one time I set fire to something in the kitchen and I couldn't move and I couldn't scream. I was literally petrified. It was so dangerous.

As a teenager, I did not have friends. My phobia then was being alone with no chance of getting married. I did get married. My early years my phobia was him leaving me. Being alone again. Now that I am old, I'm looking forward to being alone. My frear is not being taken care of in my old age.

I can handle snakes spiders heights everything...EXCEPT.... very tiny flies. I was apparently covered by swarm of them while in my pushchair as a toddler. In my eyes, nose mouth etc. Ever since then I hate them. I'm ok with bees and stuff, but blackflies eeeuughhh. Makes my flesh crawl! Oh and syringes. Another horrid childhood memory!!
