The metal rack that is in a microwave is a specially designed rack. It is there to hold what you are microwaving, it won't harm the wave guide that produces the energy to heat the items you put in the microwave. If you put metal in the microwave it sometimes causes the main power fuse in the microwave to open because it causes too much current drain, and sometimes renders the microwave inoperable until it can be repaired.

I have seen some microwave that are also convection oven. I think that there is some shielding in those microwave, but I don't know for sure.
