Second law of thermodynamics: Entropy *always* increases. So if you add salt to water, entropy increases. If you then desalinate the water...entropy increases.

In it's solid crystalized form the salt would be more consentated, both the internal structure of the crystals and they're position in the glass. As it dissolves the crystals break apart and the salt molecules drift away from each other and disperse all over the glass. Thusly while it's solid the salt retains more order then when it's dissolves. So the overall entropy of the system increases.

Let us assume the salt is NaCl

Initially,

NaCl(solid) and H2O (liquid)

After dissolving

Na+(aq) Cl-(aq) H+(aq) OH-(aq)

Net entropy increases.

it increases. in general, there is tendency in nature 4 the entropy 2 increase (at least that's wat they think).
