there is this "idea" that democracy is good and other types of government are bad and/or evil. no one system of government is inherently good or evil, but that just not how it is viewed. i'm a little more curious as to why america thinks it can "teach" democracy with bombs and force....but then historically what we see more of is the idea that america teaches a system of rule that supports the US is more what it means, be it a democracy or dictator.

FLASH needs to read more, if it wasn't for Europe there would be no America, just Indians. The English parliament is acknowledged as the cradle of democracy.
Unfortunately the democracy that the USA and Europe want to export is so badly tainted, monarchs have been replaced by corporations and capitalistic self interest. The people are fooled into thinking they make a difference when they vote and that in the system anyone can become leader. It's possibility masking probability, you could.... but you won't.
NO I'm not a communist or socialist, I would just like to see democracy cleaned up, working and given back to the people.
Yes, I realize that I must be in a democracy with certain freedoms to be able to write this without being shot, but, these are just crumbs of privilege and freedom to maintain the illusion of democracy to keep people under control.
Not to pick on anyone, but consider this. What are the chances of a father and son both turning out to be the most capable and trustworthy people in a country to run it. It's the same as hereditary kings, rule by divine right or wealth not ability, with little or no understanding or interest in the everyday lives of the people.
So why does America want to export this version of democracy.....in a word, money.
Ref DJACK No I don't misunderstand the American system. It doesn't seem to make any difference if the power is "borrowed", when was the last time Bush asked your permission? Vote for a figurehead or party, theres no difference, power is given for a defined period, you're talking semantics and trying to sound intelligent.

American Lows? We teach democracy because it is the only form of govt under which freedom can exists, and all those with truely free democracies were once oppressed & owe liberation to those now living in tyranny to great for them to overcome or of threat to freedom where it already exists.
Ref to the above: That's a bad misunderstanding of the huge differences between the American & European forms of democracy. In a parlimentary system you vote for parties & rely on national leadership. You have very little control at the local or regional levels. The American version directly elects individuals at all levels regardless of party, and places much more control at the state & local level where the people have more say in how their government works. The American system believes that all power comes from the people & is temporarily loaned to government. The Europen version believes the power belongs to govt, which is smarter than people, and that certain rights have been granted to citizens in order to keep them from rising up yeat again. That system was tyranny to us & motivated our revolution from it.

Because we Americans think we are right in EVERYTHING. Religion, government, society, culture, anything! It's terrible and we are so ignorant to our own problems, but then we go out and try to 'fix' other countries problems. I am sure Dubya Bush would not be too happy if Tony Blair came over here and wanted to turn this country into a Parliament. So what gives us the right to meddle with Iraq and other countries in the Middle East?

United States is a Republic and the best one
America's job is to spread democracy. I believe that is our purpose. We freed Iraqis from an insane dictator, and the iraqi people want us there (already proven). Insurgents are led by an evil ideaology and are not from Iraq, but they fight there and kill innocent citizens.
Don't forget, europe wouldn't have democractic nations if it wasn't for USA.
Also don't forget how Europeans force their views

Because somebody (I'm not sure who) figures that since America was the "original" democracy, we're most qualified to teach it (whether or not we actually are). What we really need to do is to teach ourselves some sense.
