I have a Compaq Digital Hinote VP 717 Model (1998) Laptop with 2 GB HD and 32 MB Ram. But the problem is I have no drivers for this and I can't Install WinXP on it. So kindly help me in finding the drivers for Win 98, 2000 or XP and How I can Install XP on it?. The Second thing is with the CD ROM, It is being DEAD every day. When ever I read a CD on it it works for 15 min greatly after that it stops. I am not sure that it a software problem or hardware problem. Kindly help me. Because the Laptop is sentimental for me.

All of the drivers "should" be at http://www.hp.com in the support/drivers section.

There are only two 717's listed, this is the first one:

As for your CD drive, I should either work or not work...it sounds like it is getting ready to die! There really isn't any software that goes bad since all of the drivers are native to the operating system. You can contact HP to see if there are any compatible replacement drives...the install isn't that tough!

This unit is suitable for Windows 98 (2000 at the most).
Your best bet is to first try HP for the drivers, and if not sign up for a free account at www.driverguide.com.
Whenever I am looking for hard to find or obsolete drivers, that is invariably where I find them as it is a user supported site (much like this, but witout the jokers) and people supply drivers all the time.
Happy Hunting!
PS - te laser in that CD-ROM is likely dying.
