People have gone over 10,000 miles on conventional (they tested the oil to make sure) but synthetic oils certainly can go further.... it just depends on the engine.... see if you can find a place that does oil analysis's, to safely determine how far you can go, also filters don't clog up as quickly as stated above.... some will go7,000 miles or more, and still filter. Just stay away from fram...cheaply made and overpriced.

It is by far the best oil you could put in your car. But please go by the manufacturers recommend on oil changes. Never go any further than that whether using conventional or synthetic oils. The oil does hold up better but it still has additive packages that are designed to last only so long. And also just because you use synthetic oil doesn't mean that dirt and water will not get into your engine. That is natural no matter what type of oil you use. So if you want to treat your engine the best then use synthetic oil but still change it the way you would conventional. Not 3000 or 5000. Whatever your owners manual says go by that no matter what.

I remember all those claims they were making with Mobil 1 you only had to do oil changes I think about 10-15K miles. They also claimed there was less wear on your engine. Well I do believe synthetic oil does not break down due to heat etc. The problem is that oil is really going to get dirty after that many miles and that could harm your engine. by the way I agree with the guy below said, change the filter often if you decide to use a synthetic oil.

Yes, synthetic lubricants last significantly longer than conventional oil.
However, in gasoline and diesel powered engines its life is severly decreased to 6 or 8 thousand miles vs. 30+ thousand miles in a gaseous fueled engine such as CNG or LPG. This difference in life is stricktly a result of carbon contamination of the lubricant.
Although there are other benefits to using synthetic oil beyond double the life of conventional oil they do not justify the added expense when used on non-gaseous fueled engines. Though I 'll say that if you wanted to add a quart to a conventional oil change its the ONLY thing I would recommed as an oil additive.

Whether regular or synthetic you should change oil every 3000 miles on older cars and probably yopu can get away with 5000 miles on newer cars.

Yes, it most definitely does, with most, like Mobil 1 going 5,000-7,500 miles. The only thing to watch is the filter, since most filters don't "filter" past 3,000-4,000 miles - they clog up with stuff, like they're supposed to, and go into "bypass" mode where unfiltered oil is being put back into your engine.
Synthetic oil is a better lubricant than regular oil, as well.

It depends on your driving habits. I have been running synth in all my vehicles for about 4 years now. I have noted that I get better mileage, slightly improved power, and IMO, it is safe to extend your oil change intervals with it. I now change my oil about evey 4 months (@6,000-7,500 miles), and everything is running perfect.
