Sealand is a small, self-declared country off the coast of england where a family took over a WW2 gun platform in international waters and claimed it as a sovereign country.
Contrary to what the previous poster said, they are still there several decades later, and have a thriving economy as the base for Europes most secure data storage facility.

There was a short lived country Sealand, in the North Sea a few years back.. Some guy and his wife took over an abandoned WW II gun platform off the coast of Britain, and made it a country. It lasted a few months.
