Having been an appraiser and expert witness, and a manager in the car business, I've used carfax thousands of times to check title status and things like that.

As a consumer, though, there's a big problem - it takes 60-90 days for things to show up on carfax...so, if it was wrecked and repaired, or bought back by the manufacturer as a lemon (seen that a lot), it wouldn't show up during the normal time that the car is sent to auction, bought by a dealer, and sold. You wouldn't know the true status of the vehicle until a couple of months after the purchase, and then it's too late.

Yes, Take the original title, and check with the department of motor vehicles. Have them run the V.I.N. number. This will tell you who the previous owner was. They can give you a better history than the dealer can. Find out why they got rid of the car in the first place. You might be surprised.

A friend of mine used carfax.com. when lhelping her son look for a good affordable used car. She said the money (didn't mention price) was well spent because she checked out one car before they made the final decision to purchase and there was a 4 year gap in the history. It makes you wonder was there something to hide?

Even if you run a CarFax on it, and it was wrecked but hasnt shown up on the carfax, check the carfax each month for about 6 months, if it happens to show you CAN return the car and demand a full refund under your states fraud and lemon laws

At CarFax you can get a single history report for $19.99 or unlimited reports for $24.99. If I remember right, the unlimited lasts for 30 days. Also, our car dealer offered to run one for us before we bought our car.
