TV - Most people form their opinions from it then are surprised when real life doesn't match.
As for me I like country music and rap. Go figure...

Exactly. Some people. Your first question implies all of us. Would you appreciate it if I, talking about Blacks, asked "What's wrong with you people?" And then proceeded to stereotype? I don't think so. So please don't do it either.
If it were a stranger, I'd say ignorance, but since he is a friend, I don't see why you're so upset. Maybe he was just teasing you. DH is Puerto Rican and doesn't much like salsa, and I tease him about being the only Puerto Rican that doesn't. He teases me, too.
Also if you are a friend, you can educate him about these things. Many times I have had legitimate curiosity questions about Blacks because I'm interested in traditions and such but I have been reluctant to ask them because of fear of being labeled a racist. You can explain things to a friend and help him to understand without that idea cropping up.

It's one of the stereotypes many people have, but may or may not be aware of. Just be glad your friend was comfortable enough with you to be candid/honest. Since he's your friend, it's safe to assume he's not a bigot. Having a preconception's the result of ignorance. You did him a favor by eliminating the preconception.
Stereotypes, and discrimination are 2 different things. A stereotype is assuming something based on a related fact. (ie: skincolor) Discrimination is making a negative decision about someone based on a social identifier.. (ie: disability, race) regardless of the person's strengths or weeknesses.

It is just plan ignorance. Everyone should respect people for individuals and actually embrace people who go against a stereotype. I went to a small liberal arts school and am part Italian. I had someone come up and hug me and give me their condolences because John Gotti had passed away. They thought that anyone who had an Italian background was involved in the mob. Which by the way, I have no ties whatsoever.

They are complete idiots don't pay the any attention and they'll get bored and find somebody else to stereotype next week. As a child I was sat on the bus with my grandad (he's jamaican and i'm white we dont know how that happened) when a woman came over and said to him "well i think its wonderful a black man adopting a litle white girl" what a cheek and i assure everyone i am not adopted

Hun I can tell you whats wrong with people. The fact is that they are all idiots and dont know anything good for themselves any more thats why when something new comes along every one seems to jump on the band wagon . Actually I think its really sexy of you to be your owne woman and have your owne style which is the way every one should be I am not saying that even with every one having thier owne style that some wont still be so similar that they will be classed in the same catagorie just that we all make it our owne buy they way we carry ourselves in this life. But needless to say I think you a super hottie just for being yourself no matter what.

People can be misguided and ignorant.
Since when being black means that you should like rap?
On the contrary I get angry when I see many black people listening to rap, just because they are black. Music doesnt define your colour, and actually nothing defines your colour.
Its a good thing you didnt follow a "fashion" and you listen to what you like.
Bless.

What's wrong with some white people? Basically the same thing that's wrong with some people in EVERY race......stupidity and ignorance. I disapprove of stereotypes as well and hate it when someone tries to shove me into any category. People are just entirely too diverse to be able to do that. Everybody is individual, with individual likes and dislikes.

people are idiots. well, i take that back, it's not our fault, it's the media. for however long back, there have been black rappers and stuff, and then when vanilla ice tried to 'do his thing' he was basically laughed at. same thing went for eminem when he started. and take rock music. there is only one band i know of (rock band ) that has all black members. that is whole wheat bread. all my friends think its dumb to listen to it b/c they should be rapping .. im like who the hell cares what they do as long as it sounds good!?!
and even to go further, all the punk rock groups and singers MUST live up to the 'standards' of the emo groups. Look at avril lavigne. everybody says, oh, she's a poser. she pretends to be hard core punk and sings pop music. she doesn't pretend to be anything, as far as im concerned.
so once again, we will blame the media! :)
