In our state you have to be registered with the corporation commission. They may give you information you need. Check into what your insurance will cost, your tags, fuel, tires, federal form 2290 (Heavy use taxes). You will need to be in a drug testing consortium, and the Department of Transportation is very strict on equipment maintenance, overweight, recordkeeping, etc. Also you may need to get a federal id number. You can get federal froms and publications at www.irs.gov. Oh, figure out how you willl promote your business, yellow pages, etc.

Hope I'm not scaring you off, Been there, Done that. It's a lot of work but fun. Good luck.

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* How to Start & Manage an Independent Trucking Business: A Practical Way to Start Your Business by Jerre G. Lewis, Leslie D. Renn
* Start Your Own Freight Brokerage Business by Entrepreneur Press
* A Practical Guide to Transportation and Logistics by Michael B. Stroh
* Trucking Simplified (TOOLS AND STRATEGIES FOR RUNNING A SUCCESSFUL TRUCKING OPERATION) by Jeffery J. Woltman, Sheena P. Woltman

I also posted links to some free articles in the source box.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

I honestly don't know, but a good place to start would be the SBA (Small Business Addministration)
