Own-Goal is one of the most unintended human errors. Its after-effects are very traumatizing. It can remain a permanent bad memory and can befall even the best player. It is the most undeserved opportunity for the other side. Therefore, the penalty kick could give the attacking side a genuine chance to score.

I agree with you ! It is a great idea ! I'm sure most americans at this point though would not agree with you ...as they are taking the goal by the Italian player as one honestly earned by their team

A very interesting and innovative idea! I fully support this proposition. This could have saved the life of one particular South American player who was shot dead after giving away an own goal during a World Cup some years ago. Only consideration is that penalty kicks are also traumatic for players who miss their shots!

own goal is own goal u can't change it and penalty kick is a penalty kick it doesn't even match
a penalty might not be scored but a own goal means a lot a team can win for an own goal just as England did in their first match of the world cup
they don't even match we can change it
pple should understand that it was just an accident........

no, I disagree

that's what makes soccer such a dynamic game. More often thatn not an own goal is the result of a player trying to make an impossible manouver to clear the ball from their own net anyway..

human error is part of sport, look at :

hockey - errant stick adling often results in own goals
track - tripping, getting caught on hurdles
american football - where one fumble can lose a game

that's the way it goes!

Why??? An own goal is a goal already. Why should it be converted to a penalty kick? Plus scoring an own goal is not a foul, why should it be a penalty kick??

No. Why punish a team for a mistake by the other side? It's a part of soccer. It is a deserved opportunity for the other side (the defender tried to clear it but didn't do the job right)...if you capitalize on the other team's mistakes, you score.

no - a goal is a goal. that would be like converting goals to a penalty if the keeper touches the ball before it goes in.

Cheaters could also take advantage of this rule by deliberatley knockin in shots that are going into goal.

Mistakes count. Moreso in such an important tournament. When a ball crosses the goal line, it's a goal no matter how it got there. I would hate to see the rule changed

Blatter said there would be goal line technology by 2014-2015 but golden goal in a CL/WC final would be the best thing ever

I think a goal is a goal, no matter what. It's part of soccer of all times, and nobody can change that. Don't you think? Errors are part of human nature just as they are moments of clarity to make a goal.
