I disagree with those who say they are ballads. Ballads usually have "sentimental" messages of the writers. I think these songs have deep messages for the world at large. If "Jude" was a sentimental love song about an old girlfriend of Paul or John's, it'd be a ballad. If "Let it be" were, again. something sentimental, it'd be a ballad. But these are songs that are points of views, "wake up calls", expressing spiritual positions/beliefs. Can't explain it better than that... But no, not ballads.
P.S. Because we've developed sentimental feelings about these songs don't make them ballads.
