Whatup Blake H, First let me say that both are hall-of-fame coaches and arguments can be made on both sides as to why one is better than the other. Showtime basketball was in some ways the height of Lakers basketball- but really that showtime era- was more about Magic Johnson bringing that to the Lakers- than Pat Riley's style of coaching. Riley had the benefit of having players who could in some ways coach themselves- actually many of Riley's players are now coaching or have had opportunities to coach elsewhere. (IE: Byron Scott, Magic Johnson (for a little bit), Kurt Rambis and Kareem (both assistants), etc. Although the Lakers had Kobe and Shaq (the two couldn't co-exist) until Phil came- when they went on their 3 peat run. It's hard to distinguish how much credit you give to the coach and you give to the players. I'd give Phil Jackson a slight edge- only because (worse case scenario) he ends up tied for the most NBA championships by an NBA coach and if he wins one more he'll surpass Red Auerbach. Both are great hall-of-fame coaches who have left their mark on Laker History! Nickster
