I agree with the guy above, technique is definetly something you can have down pat.. I swam with Phelps and he still works on his technique.. even if he beats everyone by 2 seconds.
My experience is that the way to get faster is to balance good technique with strength.. strength being specially important in a stroke like fly. you need very good upperbody strength for the pull.. and great legs to keep you going and for pushing off the walls..
Practice will get you there.. but practicing good technique and motivation will get you there faster.

this is not reccomended just an example!! Okay so u haven't swum ina while, and you do a 50 or 100 fly, you will find that once you have competed it your abs are in some pain. This stroke has a major emphasis on complete and full strength, but at the same time requires a good sleek form(body type) having great abs will definitly help you go faster. In response to everythign everyone else said here, it seems that we all agree your upper body strength is the most important! So a good gym focus on your arms and chest strength and great flexibility, will allow you to bring your arms around faster and push that water a lot harder. With a good wiggle in your legs, you should look like a mermaid, so some time on your quads would be great(upper legs), because they control the rest of your body while your arms pull you out and forward. Keep in mind that your calves need to stay firm but at the same time work with your thighs for that good wigle motion!
So mainly, to get faster, focus on your abs, focus on your upper body more, becasue a good chest helps your arms, whether your female or male, great legs for that kicking support, and good calves to keep the wiggle motion solid! So the sleek form of the water rolling under your abs and your legs amnuevering that water, will help your speed. REMEMBER! asking your coach is one of the best thigns, because yeah he/she does watch u swim a lot.

try doing 1 kick that will help alot, even tho u have the technique down do lots of drills. you should also go to the gym and mostly work on your upper body strength. remember you kick on fly, its more of a wiggle.
i know in your question you said besides practice but that is the only way to get better.
try going to the pool and doing long butterfly sets. it will build up your indurence and stanima.

umm i really doubt you have the technique "down pat". technique is one of the biggest things in fly and will give you a major advantage.
you probably know tips like your butt should be coming out of the water. however, what a lot of people dont know, is that when you breath, you should be breathing on the surface of the water. if someone was watching you, it shouldn't like you're breathing at all. that takes a lot of practice to get down.
also, to get faster, i would really work out more in addition to swimming. make sure to work out your abs, chest, and shoulders.
also, you can swim by yourself. i like to do ladders with my butterfly. 400, 200, 100, 50. going up and down or down and up, depending on what you prefer. going down really helps your sprinting and going up helps your endurance.

nicely something that sound fairly out of position is to stretch your shoulders. so that you'll convey your hands more advantageous than the water and would attain farther. Stretch your decrease back (in a bridge positions) and get your abdominals more suitable. this can help to enhance your kicking. leave your kick contained in the water so that you do not wast time and ability kicking the air and hitting the water. attempt to synchronize your stroke along with your body circulate. So went your hands are pulling the water your body is waving to furnish the kick, once you end your stroke on the back your legs must be kicking to push you ahead and help to commence the hot stroke. i am hoping this make experience to you... And maximum of something prepare a lot... commence with 1/2 laps until eventually you experience very effective...

im really good at fly
nationally ranked in the 100 & 200 m fly
you should keep working on your technique all the time because it is easy to go back to bad habits
and make sure you bring your hips up to thrust down your legs
and dont drown :]

just ask your coach about your technique because he is the one that knows what is best for you and he watches you every day so he would know what to fix in your fly and if your technique is good the you should work on your abs and your bicepts to make you stronger and if you have good upper body stregnth then work on your kicking
