Cleft lip is a congenital deformity caused by a failure in facial development during pregnancy. It can be treated with surgery shortly after birth with highly successful results. Cleft lip occurs in somewhere between one in 600 and one in 800 births.
It is colloquially called hare-lip (because a hare's lip is similarly cleft), or even hair lip (misspelling of the previous).
Cleft lip is closely related to the condition of cleft palate, and the two often occur together.
Cleft palate is a condition in which the two plates of the skull that form the hard palate (roof of the mouth) are not completely joined. In some cases, cleft lip is present as well.
Complications
Cleft palate may cause problems with feeding, ear disease, and speech. Some of the primary and permanent teeth may also be missing. When the lip is cleft as well, the person may face social stigma.

Causes
A cleft in the palate is normally present in early embryos; usually these clefts close five or six weeks after conception. The causes of the cleft remaining open are poorly understood. Possibilities include genetics, drugs, infections, maternal illness, maternal smoking and alcohol use, and deficiency of folic acid.
In some cases, cleft palate is caused by syndromes which also cause other problems.
It can be detected on ultrasound before the child is born
good luck

There are several different causes of Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate. They can be seen on a sonogram. Should the technician feel that a baby will have a cleft lip and cleft palate they will usually look to see if there are any further complications with the baby. There are a few genetic conditions that present with Cleft Lip. Most cases however are simply of unknown origin and will be closed shortly after birth. In some instances the baby may present with only a cleft lip, which is better over all. Look online for your local cleft palate group and they should be able to answer any questions that you have.

Ok well now ur talking about a subject I know better than most.
Yes it is detected on sonogram only the cleft lip not the palate that will show after birth. There avarying degrees in clefts bi-lateral,uni-lateral and midline. Also sometimes the palate can be affected but not always. Some cleft children u can breast feed but the best thing is a haberman feeder bottle or mead johnson bottle available by prescriptiona nd most insurances will cover the cost. The bottles would be ordered from a medical supply company.Clefts can be genetic ,enivormental issues and even medicines we take that we are told is safe. Check out the sites and my sons web page as well you see what I mean.

I had a cleft lip an a bit of pallet. I don't know what causes it but it should be visible on a sonogram. I am 35 and the surgery they did back then was good enough that most people don't notice although because I have one I can usually spot it in others quickly. The surgery done now would be far more advanced than when I was born.

i don't know if they can see it or not. It kind like a messed up lip and it is totally reparable with a minor surgery after birth
