I just picked up a KIA. It is under 15K and gets 38 mpg.
The Ford Focus is also a great product. I recommend test driving cheaper vehicles. The ride and comfort level are way different than the F-150.
Good luck.

I drive a 2001 Jeep Wrangler with a 5 speed. It has the 4.0 6 cyl engine, but I still get around 24-26 MPG, highway. When driving in a city its more like 20-22.

Buy either Japanese or European. I'm sorry but ignorant people can brag all they want about Ford, Chevy and Dodge, but they're crap. I work in a body shop and I see all kinds of cars all day long. Japanese make dome of the best cars out there, dollar for dollar; Honda makes (Honda/Acura) being the higher end of the Japanese quality scale.

PT Cruiser, GT model and I get about 18 miles to the gallon. I'm pretty sure some of the regular models (no turbo engine) get closer to 28 mpg. GOOD LUCK!

I can totally under stand your wanting to trade it in.. we have an F-150 and a Yukon. Gas is killing us.
The HHR's are not all that expensive and are roomy- I believe they are getting 26mpg...
