Timing belt

Hello! I am attempting to replace the timing chain and both cam and crank sprokets in my '68 Impala. Anyhoot...I got all of it apart...I just can't get the crank sprocket (the lower sprocket) off the crank! I removed the key for the balancer, which I would think should just lead the lower sprocket to slide off, but it isn't. am I missing something? A special tool perhaps? Thanks!

I finally got the lower sprocket (crank sprocket) off using a 3 prong pulley I rented from the local tool shop. That seemed to work best...thanks all for contributing your answers!!!

A lot of times, the darn thing is just stuck. There should be 3 holes in the sproket that you can use your harmonic balancer removal tool to pull it off with.

Otherwise you CAN very gently pry it off by using two large screwdrivers and blocks of wood to apply even pressure to both sides of the sprocket. Just be sure you don't nick the crank!

lol Well to start with a 327 don't have a belt it has a chain and to remove it you need to remove the water pump then the harmonic balancer then remove the timming cover you will see 3 bolts that holds the cam gear on take them out and just pull the can gear off then the chain will fall off then to get the crank gear off you just pry it off use a crow bar or something that you can pry with

with a wheel puller, you can get the balancer off,be sure to clean you alligning mark before replacing, you miss the mark your timing will be off considerably.
get a good timing chain like a roller double row chain new gears the whole set. the cam wont come out without removing the rockers they will each hit the opposite cam lobs trying to remove the cam,and likely chip the lifters.
but timing chain is easy just watch the marks and reallign exactly
