When you ask a doctor whether something is "safe" or "not safe" during pregnancy, they usually have to guess. This is not a slam or a dig on doctors. They have to guess because there is no real way to know.

The only way to find out for sure if something like what you list above is safe is to do it to thousands of mothers over a few years and see if there are any statistically signficant changes to the babies (ie, 10% lower birthweight, or significantly more miscarriages than normal). But if they do this and it ISN'T safe, then there are a lot of hurt mothers and babies out there.

Sometimes doctors look at drugs and can determine that a specific drug or chemical can't penetrate the wall between the mother's blood and the baby's blood. These drugs are generally considered safe. Soemtimes the drug can go through. Doctors don't like these drugs, and balance the risk against the health of the mother. (Our doctor, for example, gave a green light for asthsma medicine that isn't good for the baby... but neither is the baby not getting enough oxygen).

It's ultraviolet rays, NOT microwaves. Ultraviolet rays ought to be plenty safe. Microwaves aren't light, by the way. But if you're concerned at all, don't do it. You can certainly go a few months without a manicure.
