What? Does the thought of an immature 16 year old driving a deadly weapon scare you?
HELL YEAH! When I look back at some of the dumb things me ans some of my friends did driving...what were they thinking giving us drivers licenses?!?!?!
The test needs to be harder. If you fail, you should have to wait six months before taking it again. I went to renew my license recently and had to retake the test. There was another person who failed. They gave them a different test and told them to try again!!

I worked for an insurance broker and one of our companies did a study on young drivers. If you have 1000 youthful drivers under the age of 25 you will have 1000 accidents. It is not that ALL 1000 will have a wreck, but the others will have more that one and that will add up to 100% claim rate.
Considering that 35% of motor vehicle accidents are fatal that is a high mortality rate. When I was 16 I couldn't wait to get my car but I did have an accident. And I have a huge scar on my leg for the rest of my life.
I can see it both ways, because I worked on the weekends and the summer so I needed transportation. I just wish everyone would slow down and be careful. The life you save maybe your own.

For sure. I'm sorry, but teenagers really are horrible drivers.
Most of Europe has the minimum driving age set at 18, in addition to their driving tests being much more rigorous. I also think that kids should learn how to drive a stick-shift (manual gearshift) before they are allowed to ever step behind the wheel of an automatic. Having owned and driven ONLY manuals for my first 7 years, I find that you are much more aware of what is going on with your car when you are constantly shifting gears. Automatics make people lazy drivers, which is a bad habit to start out learning.

I agree with foolograce....
We need different driving tests according to the age of the driver. Also, there should be more driver's ed taught in schools and it should begin at an earlier age. Parents also need to take more time to teach their kids proper driving skills!
Raising the age to 18, while a good idea, is impractical and would be a hardship on a lot of people.

what good would that do? No matter what as a new driver you are bound to make mistakes. i got my license at 17 and am now 20. I feel I am a great driver now compared to when i started. so why move the legal driving age? there are also already restrictions to those drivers under 18. so why place more?

if you look at the insurance rates, cost of gas and a car, the only people that have the ability to drive would be kids that get funded by parents that dont want the responsibility of driving their kids around, or kids that have jobs already and even then they dont have adult bills to deal with. Metro Buses are a good solution and would promote car pooling. I think if you are going to drive below age 21 there should be a lot more to it than a fake drivers ed course, and parents providing 2000 lbs of moving metal.

Economically, it would not be the smartest idea in the US. The first 3 years (from ages 15-18) the insurance companies, gas companies and retail jobs would lose a lot of money. Until the age of 18, they would not be able to have jobs. Although, it would save lives, somewhat, it would hurt the economy more.

Yes!!! As a parent with two girls driving around with 16 yr. old boys is pretty scary. My younger daughter was rear-ended and knocked into the intersection by a young Pizza Hut driver, who was reading the map, when she was 17 yrs old. It gave her whiplash and just about totaled her car. She is now 24 and still has problems with major headaches because of the accident.

Yes I think that would be a good idea
and after we reach 60 or so we should be required to retake are drivers test. Then we should have more services that will come pick up elderly ppl and take them to doctors app or to the market. Because those sllllllllllloooooooowwwwww driving elderly ppl drive me crazy and they cause unneccessary accidents.

personally, I think the driving age does not need to be raised but I think they need to change some laws around. (there are 25 year olds that have no business driving and what about those blue haired old ladies...)
DIFFERENT LAWS DIFFERENT TEST. Test that will check drivers rationalization and mental awareness.
