We all see this everyday, and not question it. When did this originally start? Why does it still continue?

This is the only product that does this. Could you imagine going into the store and buying a soda for 89.9 cents.

it's pleasing to the eye to see something that costs, say, $2.99 versus $3.00!!!! wow ! Our eyes are trained to look at the first number, therefore it looks much cheaper to us. Lots of money is made this way.

It is done to make the public think they are paying less, for instance instead of paying $3.00 per gallon you pay $2.99 9/10. Big Savings!

It is an advertising ploy inclined to fool people into believing that it is cheaper, much like in the store where something costs $9.99 rather than $10.00.

To make it seem LESS expensive. Drivers pay attention to the large digits that say, for example, $3.11, paying little attention to small 9, which effectively makes the price $3.12.
