When the US government opened the west for colonization around the second half of the 19th century, people went there because America offered what no other nation could at the time. It accepted immigrants who wished for a better life. Also, if you could make it to the territories out west, filed your claim (on a given piece of land), survive there farming for five years, then it was yours. It was like making a bet with the American Government that you could. What better enticement could there be?
Also overpopulation in the East and an entire country all the way to the west coast where there was nothing except maybe native american indian tribes and virgin country was too much to resist. Hundreds upon hundreds flocked west to see their dream come true. Of course it was not easy, the harsh weather, hostile tribes and human greed made it hard for many families who finally relinquished their claims and went back east.
The American Government did not handle the situation with the Native Americans very well. The Native Americans were lied to. While the Government kept telling them that their lands would not be taken, they would then tell the Pioneers that it was ok to do it. As a result there were clashes between the Native Americans and the Pioneers (prejudice against the indians got to the point that they coined a saying: the only good indian is a dead indian) and finally the Government justified sending troops to control the Native Americans, who were massacred at will, their lands taken away, entire tribes of survivors sent to the worst possible places where reservations were set up, their children forced to attend schools and indoctrinated to adapt as soon as possible to the American ideal life, denying them their cultural heritage, and a lot of other terrible mistakes no one likes to talk about, mistakes that continued all the way to the first half of the 20th century. The western genre deals a lot with that era, and movies about it were still going strong all the way to the 1950's.
Hope this answers your question.

You mean during the discovery of North America? The first peope to settle were the Pilgrims, or puritans, who-Baking away from the Anglican chuch wanted to establish and practice their own religion on their own in peace. Among the firstly established towns we can find Jamestown for example. In the later coming years more and more people migrated from Europe to North America since they were promised land there, (which of course they first had to work for, but which stayed in their property for the upcoming generations) Colombus -remember, he discovered North America, the Sourth was discovered by Amerigo Vespucci-sailed to the North of America in the hope of reaching India-however he got to North America instead be accident. Believing that the local Native Americans were Indians at the beginning, this is where the name of Native Americans "Indians" originates from. Learn more at http://www.thefreedictionary.com/, or www.wikipedia.org. They're all free. Britannica Online Encyclopedia and Microsoft Encarta are also good.
