Legally... It's the law. Everyone... even the guilty have a right to representation. Some lawyers who do pro bono work almost have 0 choice in representing some people. It's how this country is set up. It's to be sure everyone is getting a fair shot. I don't necessarily agree with it.. but that's how it is set up.
Morally? I don't know...but again sometimes they don't have a choice. For those that do, well some do it for money, some for fame and some just because they want to. I mean look at how some people answer questions on here... they like the fact that it gets them attention. Sad but true.

There are some lawyers who open their dealings with a client by saying that they do NOT want to hear that they are guilty. This allows them to prepare a defense without having to admit to themselves that they are helping a murderer go free.
Also, the law has become so convoluted that for some lawyers it is a big game - trying to find a way to get their client off gives them sort of a "high." And the money is a big issue too - although most Lawyers - in Canada, anyway - get paid whether their client goes to jail or not.
There are some good lawyers out there - good in the sense that they have their morals in order and will not defend people like this. But because of the way the system works, these fine people often go into Corporate or Real Estate Law where they don't have to face the dilemma. Then there are some "Good" lawyers, who will do anything and everything they can, morals be damned, to win the case and look good themselves. They will make the victim look guilty, cast doubt on the observations of the witnesses, and use insanity defenses or fine points of law to get cases dismissed... I have no doubt where these lawyers are going when they die. But there are a lot of them, and they make a lot of money. I guess that's a big incentive for some people - but basically they are selling their souls, and they do a lot more harm than good.

They often do not argue for aquittal but rather for a reduced sentence or a lesser charge (manslaughter, etc.). The Constitution allows everyone access to a fair trial and counsel. There is no plea other than "no contest" which for legal reasons is not used very often. So often a plea of not guilty is entered and the trial goes on but the attorney knows full well that their client will be convicted.

By giving them access to a fair defense. This happens all the time, but it is the responsibility of the lawyer to provide them with a fair defense.

Because as long as they get paid and it is not their own family being killed, they really do not care. To me, they are just as heartless as the murderers, since they help them get away with murder.
