When I told my grandpa that I am gonna divide 25% of the property shares amongst 5 of us brothers, getting each of us 1/5th of the property, he said I am cheating him.... 1/5th (ie. if we divide 25 with 5) of 25 is not 5 but 14!!!!! Though it was a shock to me, as I was thinking so far that I am very good in maths, but the possibility of getting the answer he said gave a new direction to me, though I know it is wrong.... So my good friends, why don't you try dividing 25 with 5 and get the result 14?

Let A = Total shares

25% = 1/4 x A

1/4 x A divided by 5 = 1/20 x A

Since 1/20 A = 14

A = 280 Shares originally.

The answer 14 is only admissible when the original Total shares is 280

Dont know about the "14."
25% of the entire share = 1/4 (25 %)
>>> 25 / 5 = 5 >>> which again (is 1/5 of the 25 or 20 % of the 25 %)
each in turn will hold : 5 % of the entire shares

According to my calculations you are both wrong. If you divide 25% of the property among 5 brothers they will each get 1/5 of the 25% which is 5% of the total property or 1/20.

You are not dividing the ENTIRE property by 5, but only a quarter of it. There is still 3/4 (75%) of the property not divided.

So the 25% is divided 5 ways, so each person gets 1/5 of the 25%. Not sure where the 1/14th is coming from........

If you divide 25% of property shares among five people, each would get 5% of the total. For each of you to get 1/5 of the property, you'd have to divide the whole amount, not 25% of it, five ways.

This is a trick but it's all to do with the way you write the calculation and answer.

25 / 5 = 14... because
5 into 5 goes 1
5 into 20 goes 4 times, written as 14

I saw this on an old black & wide comedy sketch once, so I may have got it wrong, but I'm sure it's something like that.

The only way would be if

1/5[25% (x)] = 14

You have 280 property shares.

Let me se....

1st method....
5)25(1 --> since 5 won't go in 2 but will go in 5 one time.
5
---------
5)20(4
---------> meaning, 25:-5=14 (Since this is a funny question, the answer should be considered as a correct one!

Second Method

14x
5
------
20+ ----- 5x4=20
5 ------5x1=5
-------
25 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Again the above reason.....

Third method....
14+
14+
14+
14+
14
----
20+ ---- Add only the 4s.....
Now add the 1s with 20...
20+1+1+1+1+1=25!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (hand me!!)

So the bottomline is 25:-5=14!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Again, it is a funny question enh!?!?!

25% is not 1/5 it's 1/4

so if there's 5 of you you'd get 20% each.

ignore the above - i mis-read the question you each get 5%
