You can do this if you sign up with a reputable panel company. Depending upon who you are, some might pay you cash for each one you do. Others you may earn "points" that you can accumulate and redeem later for cash or prizes. Getrd2go is right, though, sometimes it takes a number of surveys before you get paid. Even if it is a pay per survey deal, it could take you 4 to 6 weeks to get paid.
So if you're looking for a get rich quick scheme by doing a bunch of surveys online, I'd say you'd best forget it. If you would like to influence the products and services that companies offer, though, and get some compensation for your time, then it could be an opportunity you'd enjoy.
Doing surveys online provides feedback to big companies. You might see new product ideas and get to test them. You might be asked questions about the customer service you received when you bought something from a company. Or you might get to test a company's new advertising campaign.
Generally the longer the survey, the more you get paid. Really long ones often pay cash. Plus if you are sent a product to try, you get to use it and keep it.
When you sign up with a reputable online panel company, you will probably have to fill out a profiling questionnaire. This allows them to ask you about products and services you might be interested in. For example, knowing your age and gender means that only younger females would get a survey about lipstick. Men they might ask about motor oil.
If you've got the time and the interest in helping companies make better products/services for you, I'd say go for it.

I'd agree with what Bruce M said. I'm signed up with HarrisPoll, for example. I don't get "paid," but I do get points that I've redeemed for things. It takes a while, and I don't do it to make a bunch of money or get a bunch of stuff. If there were no incentives, I probably wouldn't do it, but they're basically just a bonus. The surveys are quick and easy. I know there are other companies out there like this. However, you'd have a hard time finding someone to pay you very much for takings surveys.

I have tried a few of the surveys on line, and didn't get paid. Most of them offer on line shopping dollars, or points which can be redeemed for prizes. I found that it took too much time and too many surveys to make it worth doing.
