I believe that a stable Iraq could be achieved. They will not have a democracy as we know it. Islam views religion and politics as inseparable so it will influence what may be called a democracy.

Stable - yes, probably.
Democracy: - not as we know and envision it. I think that any time a people let their religious leaders or any religious sect take the predominant role in deciding their political, both local and international, policies, there will be no outcome that resembles our idea of democracy or democratic principles. (Look up some information on the Taliban and their religious/government control of the people in Afghanistan)
I feel that political leaders can be religious but our religious leaders should not be political. Let our religious leaders tend to our souls - not our politics.
Unfortunately, and for whatever reasons, it seems that some muslim religious leaders take more satisfaction in subjugating or eliminating any who do not believe exactly as they do than they get from teaching the beliefs of their religion. Perhaps they do not wish to relinquish their position of power and the plush living this affords them?
My largest concern about Iraq is the future of the Kurds in this whole thing. They have survived genocide by Saddam and the Sunni religious sect when they were in power. They cannot unite and form their own nation due to objections by both the Sunni and Shiite religious sects and the Turkish government. The Kurds SEEM to be a hard working people, interested more in providing a better life for themselves than becoming involved in a power struggle - although they must protect themselves. What will happen to them when the new Iraq government is left on its own in a year or two.

the middle east in general has not been stable for thousands of years. What makes you think it will ever be?
Our government just calls any other government that they don't like a "regime". Even the democratically elected ones, such as Iran.
So cut the crap about we are spreading democracy in Iraq or that it's about the war on terrorism. Those are just the cover up excuses that they came up with after they could not find any evidence of WMD.

If you can take the greed for power out of the heads of some of the tribe or religious leaders, it's possible.
Right now those leaders are fighting to take Saddam's place. Their followers are willing to fight and die just so their mullah can be the next dictator.
There can be no peace in Iraq until everyone thinks of themselves as Iraqis, nor sunnis, or kurds, or shiites, or anything else - - - all just citizens of Iraq - - - Iraqis.

That area has not been "stable" for thousands of years now .... I think not. As for "democracy" sure .. it will last .. not like they didn't have a "democracy" before the invasion .. elections and everything ... it will quickly go back to simply having elected leaders who's main campaign strategy involves thugery.

iraq is not going to be stable because it is an artificial state created by foreigners (churchill and the french, after ww1) with no idea of what they were doing. iraq was three states (villayats) under ottoman rule and there was not a lot of open hostility because they were allowed to keep their distance from one another, not shackled together by imperial powers trying to control their oil

We may have to take the terrorists, one by one, bathe them, teach them to use deodorant, cut off their beards, and sit them in a classroom five days a week in school uniforms to learn about western civilization, democracy, human rights, and all the other topics about which they are egregiously ignorant.
Either that, or buy a lot more bullets.
