I think they are hostile. The alien at the end was spraying a nerve/poison gas into the boy's nose to paralysis him/kill him, but because his asthma closed his airway, the boy lived because the gas did not go into his lung and blood stream, so the asthma saved him. Then his father saved him from dying from the asthma attack by giving him medicine with a hypodermic needle. So the aliens were going to kill the boy, so they are hostile.
In response to your additional details, if the alien at the end of the movie was trying save the boy, then when he sprayed the gas on his mouth, the asthma would have cleared up and the boy would have been able to breathe and live without the shot from his dad.

Dear Friend, While the entertainment media would have us believe all aliens are hostile, with the exception of perhaps E.T., I believe they are neutral. If aliens have the ability to traverse time/space in a timely manner, they certainly have the capabilities of destroying our world/planet. Some folks claim to have been abducted by aliens, but in most cases the the humans didn't report being hurt, but rather examined, both physically and psychologically. No, I don't think any other life form poses the danger we humans pose for ourselves. Respectfully, Uncle Bear *:-))

I love this movie. I love all of Shamalan-ading-dong's (or whatever his name is) movie. It's interesting the way you look at the movie, everyone interprets things differently. I think the aliens were hostile, so to speak, or were just trying to survive and humans were in their way, I'm pretty sure the alien at the end was hostile because he was the alien that got his fingers cut off by Mel Gibson (they showed his hand close up when he was holding the boy) and I think he was just going to kill the boy for revenge, because he knew all his people had left the planet and he was probably pretty pissed that he got left behind due to his injury. I can't speak for the others though.

That's an interesting theory, but I'd have to disagree with you. Remember the alien in the end was left behind. Also, notice that this alien is the same one that Mel Gibson had cut the fingers off of. It was said that the gas that was expelled was a nerve gas that caused cease of breathing and paralysis. Also remember that although the boy did survive, he was in the middle of an asthma attack when it happened and didn't breath in the gas.
Of cource the film is to showcase how man is untimatle terrified of things that are unfamiliar.
It's also about the things that people say in death, that somethings that sound silly are not so.
Shamanon movies are riddles, they are ment to make you think.

The aliens are hostile and want to take over the planet.
The alien is spraying poison into the boy's nose. I think the meaning is that everything happens for a reason, even if it's not obvious at the moment.

HOSTILE!! At the end, the guy talking on the radio while they were still in the basement did talk about them killing people & that they had come to harvest humans. The movie had a lot of hidden meanings, the convoluted family relations & the grief, anger & forgiveness that had to come from losing his wife - but the main theme of the movie came when he explained the theory about two kinds of people to his brother; are we alone or is there someone looking out for us so that there are no coincidences? Everything happened for a reason in that film. His wife was killed; when he talked to her as she was dying she told him to see, told Merrill to swing. The little girl had a problem with water - there were glasses of water everywhere - turned out, the water could kill the aliens. Merrills bat was right where he needed it to beat the crap outta the alien, etc etc.

The aliens were hostile. Didn't you see the aliens trying to hurt the boy?
The movie has a lot of deep meanings- fate, destiny, the sovereignty of God, the human condition, the fear of the unknown, faith, hope, coincidence (or the lack thereof), the ties that bind us, family, war, etc.

They are harvesting people to take back to the ship. The reason why the boy doesn't die when they spray him is cause he wasn't breathing and then the father gives him a shot (assuming adrenaline).
Your a fool. What about the dog? yipe yipe ...... gone.
They left because everyone figured out that water was there poison.
Next alien attack we will designate you goodwill ambassador and sacrifice you oh I mean send you on out to talk to them.
