Reuters reported yesterday (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060620/us_nm/media_rather_dc) that long-time CBS News veteran Dan Rather is leaving CBS after 44 years of service. Essentially, the 74 year old is angry that he's not getting any substantial assignments anymore.

Is he right to quit? What would you do?

maybe 74 is just to old to be working all the time. He's probably just tired.

Essentially, CBS doesn't want to send the old fart anywhere because of his age and possible health effects...Can you really picture Dan Rather in the middle of the desert covering warfare?? He's just pissed that he's getting older and they are phasing younger more ab;e people in...he had a great career, but it's time to take on a more supportive, passive role or get out of the way...It's just like veteran football players when a rookie is drafted to replace them, you can either mentor and have a check/job or ***** about it and be unemployed..

I heard that Katie Couric ordered CBS not to give Rather more assignments. Apparently, she is very close friends with Marla Mapes, the producer of the National Guard debacle, and both women hold Rather responsible for Mapes' downfall.

He has enough time in to retire. His quiting will leave him a handful of retirement bucks per month, plus his social security benefits. He has given his life to CBS and he has the right to feel the way he does. He has been a tremendous asset to cbs and they know that.

Dan has flipped out on his reporting as of late. It's time to leave the field permanently. He also was caught reporting false information. Kiss of death for a reporter.

He embarrassed the network with his poorly researched National Guard story on George Bush (and probably exposed the media's liberal bias).

I would quit, too.

He was on the wrong frequency ; and too many people were on to his crafty way of "re-inventing " the news .He might look for work at Grimms fairy tales-since he is so interested in fantasy .
