According to Microsoft, Word uses a file on disk as a buffer for large files that would not normally fit in internal memory.

If Word is not open and all files are accounted for, there still may be some of these files on the disk. This is a program error in Word. All these files can be deleted. JUST MAKE SURE WORD IS THROUGH AND CLOSED.

Also, MS Word uses an open tmp file for automatic backups. They are recognized by having a ~ at the beginning and the file type of .tmp. If your system had Word in progress and power went out. the file is in also in one of these tmp files. They just collect on your hard drive using valuable space that can be used be reviewing the file an deleting if it is not needed. You can drag an drop the file on Word to see what it says.

The second file a temporary file. Large files may not fit into memory, and across a slow network the file may need lots of altering to save it. But the main reason is for backup and crashing.

No matter what you do to a program, it can still crash. When you've spent ages typing a letter or work, the last thing you want is a crash, however rare it may be.

Microsoft helped prevent data loss by using a back up file. This is the 0Kb file you see, usually starting with a tilde ("~"). This file is stored in the same folder or a temporary folder for read-only disks.

Each time you save the file, it uses the back-up file to write the file and swaps the two over. In the event of a crash, you still have your temporary file and your original, so you lose hardly anything. The back-up file also stores the Auto-Recovery information.

However, this file is also used to track changes made to the document, so that your masses of changes since the last save do not clog up the memory.
