I received an e-mail called "Abolish the 'N' Word. The pictures were so graphic but what really made me sick to my stomach was all the younger people and their CHILDREN standing there smiling like what was happening was OK.

It's defnitely taught. I've worked in preschools, and I can tell you for certain that kids ages three and four do not know racism. They are all friends with whoever seems fun to be friends with. They are naturally curious about their differences, and that used to produce some very funny situations, but they are not judgmental or racist, and it does not affect their desire to be friends with someone.

Later, some kids learn to hate, to find safety in what they know and to fear what they do not, and to use derogatory words to put down people who are not like them. Racists are frightened, ignorant fools who have sadly taken on the behavior of those they've been influenced by.

Definately you learn from the people that you are around the most....and if your being taught that people that dont look like you are just wrong and everything that they do is wrong then your going to grow up and believe that....but i believe as you get older you know better...you can disifer right and wrong and i know the email that your talking about and every person the has an ounce of dignitiy would know that, that was one of the most horrible things to see....you can grow up in a house full of racist people but once you reach a certain age you should be able to think for yourself and realize that just because people dont look or talk or walk or act the way that you and the people that you usually are around do ...that their people too...and not all bad...racism is still at large and people need to start making a change

Yes I believe raceism is definately taught, passed down in families. I try to teach my kids that skin color doesnt mean anything its how a person acts, how they behave that matters. As an example after the first day in kindergarten I asked both about their day, how many boys intheir class, girls, then I asked how many black just to see what they would say, both had the same reaction, No black kids but a couple of chocolate kids. because the color of skin was like a chocolate candybar, they didn't know the 'N' word or consider blacks they were just kids.

Racism is always taught or influenced. People are never born with racism, we were born with one ability - to love, and everything else comes later on. There is no way someone just wakes up and decides, I'm gonna hate everyone thats not like me, it is taught or influenced in some way and thats how they get these horrible ideas.

Oh yes racism has been taught for a long time. When you are a baby you can do nothing but question things and love. Your morals are built on what your parents help you to perceive. Once you are grown; however, it is your decision to make to hate or not.

Yes, you are right. Today most racism is taught or handed down from the parents, guardians, grandparents, etc. to their children in both races. There is racism in both the white and black race.

Racism is the result of both a natural human tendency to judge, fear, or dislike that which is different (including people with different colored skin) and of the diffusion of an exaggerated form of that hatred through family and social values that reinforce racial stereotyping.

In other words, we're born with a tendency to cling to that which is familiar and to shun that which is different. But it is society's reaction to that natural tendency that determines whether we overcome our fears and ignorance or buy into them even further and propagate hatred and violence rather than tolerance and unity.

I believe that a lot of racism is taught and generationally guided, but I also believe that a lot of it is absorbed from being in society (kinda like osmosis). Ever heard that phrase "Monkey see, Monkey do"? That's a perfect example of what I'm talking about. We learn by observation and by our families.
