Tourist Advice-Tunisia!?

Question

Hi, I am hoping to visit Tunisia within the next year, but I really know nothing about it. What are the best places to visit? Is it expensive? What kind of clothing is appropriate? Is it ok for women traveling alone to go? Best way to get there from France?

I am an American living in Monastir Tunisia nad have visited most of the country, so I can pretty much answer any questionss that you may have.

The best places to visit. Well, that depends on what you are wanting to do. I am assuming that you are looking for a nice beach area. That would have to be Mahdia, Monastir, Hammamet, Djerba, and Nabeul. All are nice towns with beautiful beaches. For nightlife in Mahdia, you have to mainly rely on the hotels. Same in Monastir, but most go the half-hour to Sousse where there is lots of shopping, resteraunts, discos, and touristicy places. Hammamet, Djerba, and Nabeul have plenty to offer in way of resteraunts, shopping and nightlife.

Tunisia also has mountain towns, an oasis, and of course, the Sahara dessert. The country is rich in history and culture, so everywhere you go you are bound to find something from ancient times.

It is not very expensive there. Going to a local cafe to get a coffee or a coke or something will run you 3 TDN (Tunisian Dinars) maximum. That is about $2.27 Us dollars. Even in the touristicy areas where you pay more, it still doesn't come out to be that expensive. But do try to bargen your price down. All vendors in the touristic areas have a tourist price, and a "real" price. Don't be afraid to walk away if the first one doesn't meet the price you are wanting to pay, they are plenty of others who will.

All types of clothing are appropriate. Tunisia is very modern and takes much of it's culture from France. Just out of common curtisy though, thry not to bring anything too short or too revealing - you'll get a lot of stares and maybe some unwanted comments.

It is perfectly safe for women to travel alone. Tunisia is a very safe country. I sometimes go walking at 10pm by myself, and nothing ever happens. Sometime the men will try to talk to pretty ladies. Just ignore them and continue on your way.

The best way to get to Tunisia from France is, of course, by plane. Which company you take and what airport you fly into will have to be something you decide. There is an airport in the capitol Tunis, which is close to Carthage, in case you are interested in visiting the ruins there. There is an airport in Tabarka, which is in the mountains of Tunisia, and they are very gorgeous with tons of nice scenery. There is an airport in Toezer which is kind of in the central of Tunisia where there are many cultural sites. There is an airport in Monastir, which is a quiet touristic town, and there is and airport on the Isle of Djerba. TunisAir of course flies to all these destinations from France.

Excellent country!

It's probably the most westernized country from northern Africa.
Safe country, good food and wine, very influenced culturally by Mediterranean countries such as France and Italy.

what else can I say? It's like talking about a Western European country with a different religion (not Christians).

They're presently modernizing the country, opening it to foreign investments: many European companies are moving factories to Tunisia because of labor costs.

Way of living is becoming more and more European style, although traditional habits style play a major role in Tunisian society, but less and less nowadays.

Alchool consumption is not yet approved by society and government.


But they very to tourism and tourists :-)
