Basically I don't want to delete the songs already on the Ipod but whenever I plug it up to my computer it prompts me to replace the songs already on the ipod with all the songs on my computer. Also, it will not allow me to retrieve the songs from the ipod and add them to the computer or even listen to them through the computer.

yes
Its simple I did the same thing its a program called poduntil it will allow you to transfer songs from you ipod to your computer the only draw back is it keeps asking you to buy a subscription. you don't have to pay for any ting just keep exiting out of the box. It will transfer all your songs onto your computer. it puts them in a folder that you chose. then you have to go into itunes and click import and chose the folder you put the songs in then import them. make sure all your songs on your ipod are there then update your ipod to your library and then the songs are now in itunes and you can add other song like you would normally do.

This web site http://www.ilounge.com/ is a gold mine and it will have answers to all your ipod ?'s. this is the website that will have the link to the program poduntil just follow the directions there http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/ipod-software/.

Can you keep the songs? Yes

Is it legal for you to keep the songs? No.

The only way you are allowed to keep the music that comes on an IPod is if the seller purchased the song online and the only remaining copy is on the IPod or if the seller also included an original 'hard copy' of the song in CD, Tape, or LP form and deleted all MP3 versions of the songs off of his own machine.

You won't be able to retrive the music from the ipod and move it to your computer. It's not designed to do that.

When you are prompted to synch your ipod with your music that is in your computer choose simply choose no. the music already there will be safe and you can add music as well.

Yes, but make sure when you upload new songs from your library that you custom manage the upload or elese iTunes will automatically delete all songs on iPod and replace them with only the songs in your library. Unless those song that came with your iPod are also in your library, you will have to make sure you manually upload songs.

You need to go in the Ipod parameters in Itunes (preferences), and choose not to automatically update your Ipod with all your Itunes music.
