If it hums, the switch is probably OK, but it may be jammed with debris. Turn the switch off, then go to your breaker panel and turn off the circuit that controls the disposal, or better yet, shut down the power in the entire house.

Use a long handled wooden spoon and a flashlight to look down into the disposal. If you're lucky, you'll see something caught in the mechanism. If you can, pull it out, using another wooden object, or a bent coat hanger. Don't get your tools jammed too! Use your hands and fingers as a last resort and only if you are certain the power is off.

Good luck and be careful.

Likely there is somthing caught. I have had this happen a lot in the past. Pour some cooking oil in the drain and let it soak for a while then turn on the switch and take a long larg screwdirver or if you have to a butter knife and stick it in there and push the blades in thier normal rotation wich I believe is counterclockwise. If you can not get it to start it may be burnt out and you perhaps need a new one.

try looking for a reset button on your disposal. if there is one then press it. If not then I suggest unplugging it and then stick your hand inside the disposal and try to free up the blades. If this does not work than you need a new one. If there is a humming sound when you turn on the switch than the switch is not burned out!

It may just be jammed with something. Use a long hammer handle & try to turn the cutter wheel manually. If you can't get it to turn after that, it's time for a new one.
You may have a wrench that came with your disposal for doing this. It looks like a wierd-shaped Allen wrench, & it fits in a socket in the bottom center of the disposal.

Do you have the special wrench thingy that came with it? Look up the owner's manual for the unjamming intstructions on the manufacturers website.
