the war of 1812!!!

In the War of 1812, the United States was very successful during the first few battles. In several equal battles, US frigates won decisive victories over British frigates. The army did well as well.

Unfortunately, the tide turned dramatically when the Napoleonic wars ended and England was able to send several ships of the line away from France. These were vastly superior in firepowe to the frigates the US Navy had. From this point on, the US Navy was basically stuck in their ports, unable to get out and engage the British.

The army was a different matter. They thought it would be trivial to invade Canada, but they were beaten badly when they tried.

Hope this helps.

Wikipedia has a good article on this.

British War? Are you talking about World War 2 or the American Revolution?

If you are talking the War of Independence, we got our tushes kicked. Both on land and on sea. The Colony Navy was never effective, the French saved our bottoms on that one. Washington got hounded to Valley Forge, and we lost New York. Aside from that we did just fine.
