Did it seem like it was all a bunch of setup for the next book, with very little excitement in it?

I know what you mean. It seemed like everything happened that we expected to - and nothing happened that didn't.

It was nice, on the level of we care about these characters from the previous books and want to know what happened next in their lives. But if this had been the first Jean Auel I picked up, I'm not sure if I would have gotten through it because very little seemed to actually happen.

Sorta kinda disappointed. But every author in writing a series can have a bad day once in a while. Maybe perhaps Ms.Auel was running out of fresh ideas for her characters and all of their traveling adventures and trying to settle them down. But really how adventuress can a home life in a cave be.

Yes I was. I thought that the first 2 or 3 books were good but then they started going down hill. Maybe it was just too much of a good thing.

'Fraid I lost my way with it all after The Monmouth Hunters. How many books have their been since? And now other writers are following the same formula with prehistory. All gets a little much--too much of a good thing, you know.
