there probably having swimbladder issues.Goldfish are genetically prone to swimbladder problems because their bodies are so compacted.

If you feed flakes then they are gulping air at the surface and the air throws off their bouyancy. If you feed flakes you need to hold them below the surface of the water and let them sink.

If you feed sinking pellets then they prevent your fish from gulping air at the surface. The pellets themselves are full of air though. If you feed pellets you need to soak them in water for two minutes before feeding.

Another diet problem is that your fish food is high in protein. Goldfish should eat a lot of vegetation. They become constipated on such high protein diets. You should supplement their diet 3 days a week with shelled peas. You can also put a lettuce clip with romaine but they will prefer the peas.

It really hepls to starve your fish for 3 days before you change the diet. This will clear out the digestive system. It sounds like your problems aren't that bad though, it may not be neccesary.

I have an extremely sensitive Fantail who is a varocious eater. After eating he is always a little floaty but it passes after the pressure from his stomach relieves his swim bladder.

If the change in diet doesn't help he may have a minor bacterial infection. They sell medicated food that helps.

do they do it on a regular basis? Goldfish are prone to bladder infections. This will cause them to float sideways or even unpside down. You can try a few things. First do a 20 percent water change and then Try adding about a teaspoon of Rock Salt to the water. This will add certian electrolites for your fish. Secondly, try feeding him either frozen or fresh, shelled baby pees. They are a great veggie source that has been known to help that particular problem. If these show no results within 5 days you should go get some tetracycline from your local fish store. Most are in a tablet form, one tablet for 10 gallons of water, treated everyday for 5 days. Just read the package instructions, and all should be fine.

you are probally feeding them flakes. goldfish gulp alot of air and when you feed them things that float on top the water they gulp even more air. this will sound crazy but it works... get frozen peas.. like the kind we would eat.. thaw one out pop it out of the shell and feed it to him. if he is really bad off you will have to hold it in front of him and make sure he finishes one whole pea. you may have to break it into small pieces if your fish is smaller. and also switch to a sinking pellet not any thing that floats. also aquarium salt.goldfish do well with aquarium salt. it is for all fish!!! there is salt in fresh water! only add one tablespoon per gallon and only ever put more in if you take water out and then only put in salt for the amount of water YOU took out.

If they are on their side, and showing little to no effort to correct themselves, they are probably ill and/or dying.
