Its a pretty careless thing to do losing a needle even near a haystack.
Mythbusters did this last series ... they used a combination of high power magnets, water (to make hay float and needles sink), fire (to burn away hay), and plain luck.

By using a magnet, a metal detector or water. Dry hay floats.
Even tougher though, how do you find a needle in a needle stack.

You could try a metal detector, but a magnet is probably more reasonable.

well, you could use a magnet. You could set fire to the hay stack and after the fire is out sort through the ash. you could dive into the hay stack and feel around with your hands. when you get a pin prick you've found it

either with a very powerdul magnet like the ones they to pick up cars with or just a lot of time to pick through it all

this was hard at first but here it is.you burn they hay stack and thin take a low powerd fan to blow away the ashes and thin you take a magnet over the area that you burned.and thin you found it.simple and easy.
