Wow these are some pretty harsh answers. I mean who are we to tell a Native American what offends them. I'm not Native American but I could see how a white guy dressed up in "tribal" clothes, running around and essentially mocking their culture, would be very offensive. I mean would we be allowed to have a team called the Blacks and have a mascot who runs around eating chicken and watermelon or dressed up in slave clothing? How offensive is that? Because it’s the same thing with Native Americans! Not to mention all the suffering their culture has gone threw in the past hundred or so years. I’m a huge Braves fan and I don’t personally see anything wrong with the tomahawk chop but if some Native Americans come forward and say that it is offensive I can definitely sympathize.

Actually, I've heard it said that the current leader of the Seminole tribe has fully endorsed the use of the name "Seminoles" by Florida State University. He said something to the effect that it was an honor for his people to be recognized by the University in such a way.I do realize that there are "culturally sensitive" folks out there who are offended by people who have evoked things of their race in a derogatory manner, but this is college athletics, not someone loosely using a slang term to describe a certain people! In these instances, "culturally sensitive" people need to get over themselves! I for one am only a small part Native American, yet enjoy the pagentry and color of FSU and college football in general! If someone wants to act a fool and have a good time by evoking the spirit of the Seminole nation by painting up, throwing a spear and doing the tomahawk chop, go for it!

Does not matter, cultural sensitivity is a bunch of baloney. It is not the Indians that are the subject it is a mascot and the teams that are the focus of attention. To many cry babies in the world, just reminding people that Seminoles are in fact American Indians is a service that would not happen if it were not for the FSU athletic teams.

The Seminole Nation approves of the FSU mascot. This has been in the news before, and a Seminole Chief has approved the use of their name. There are several Seminole Indians that attend FSU as students. The mascot is symbolic of Chief Osceola and his horse, Renegade.

I think team names after Native Americans isnt disrespectful at all. Players play a game for a team like the Natives Americans fought for their tribe. A white guy dressing like and Indian for entertainment isnt new. In the "cowboy movie days" Native Americans would play Indians in movies so Hollywood got white and lation men and weman to play indains. I do think though that they should have a Native American leading the fans. Oh yeah gators suck.

different than for probable Indians followers, why could the different communities followers try this? formerly moving from Milwaukee and formerly then from Boston, Braves followers in those 2 cities did no longer choose a "tomahawk chop" for occasion help for their MLB team. So it is going to likely be a southern U.S. fan ingredient. If adequate Atlanta followers concept it replace into offensive, they could be waiting to place a halt to the chop. yet then they could must be like followers of 29 different communities.

Yes, that is making the Native Americans look like barbaric war people. They did have wars and stuff but there are other things in their culture besides war. Go Gators!
