I live next to the 2nd largest lake in the U.S. so we usually have great fireworks over the lake that the county or community provide. We drive up to the lake and get a blanket to put in the bed of the truck or hood of the car and my hubby and I sit and sometimes cuddle while we watch the fireworks over the lake... its fun and completely free. See where there is a body of water near you that provides fireworks. Water looks so pretty and romantic when lit up. They usually will have concession stands or activities as well.

Most fun things are free or cheap on the 4th of July. For us, we visit a site that re-enacts the Revolutionary War. That's like $15 for the whole family.

We like to do a BBQ and Bonfire. Invite some friends or neighbors over. Have everyone bring dishes and drinks. That way it doesn't cost anyone too much. See if anyone has a bean bag toss game that they could bring. And there ya go!

Here is my brand new idea: get some helium at a local party store, get baloons and sparklers. Inflate baloons with helium, light up the sparklers and tie a burning sparkler (req. a long string) to each baloon. Release the baloons. Works best when the sun is down completely.
