Fluctuating electricity voltage levels from your power company (brownouts, surges, poor service level management, system defects, etc), can cause erratic behavior or damage. Lightning striking your building can cause damage to all electrical appliances. Surge protectors can provide at least partial protection.

Overloading your computer's internal power supply by adding too many new devices (hard drives, DVD drives, PC cards, etc.) can cause erratic performance. Or your power supply may be defective.

Finally, (this is a long shot) if you are close to strong electric motors (large air conditioners in your building, etc.) or power company installations, strong electro-magnetic fields can interfere with your computer.
