I remember them in Europe.
To be honest, they seemed much more sanitary - you don't have to sit on a questionable toilet seat, but they can be uncomfortable at times.
In response to the ladies above, you don't urinate down your leg because you squat all the way down. It can actually be very clean.
They have many pros and cons.

Well, I think the reason that men's toilets smell more is that the urine splashes in the urinal. It would be worse for women! (But, hey , if they're up for it, more power).
Overseas I've seen squatting toilets - like a shallow tray with two raised bits to stand on - that works. Apparently squatting is better for pooing. And it's good for your spine.

Well that would probably just be gross. You'd have to squat over it and hope you don't get any on your pants. We lack the ability to point and aim, so it'd probably be very unsuccessful, I wouldn't use it for sure.

actually women CAN pee standing up LOL .. they just dont have the tube that we do LOL but they can still aim it. i have seen it done LOL
