Well, quite a few companies bottomed out in the "Dot Com Crash". But if you mean other enduring companies, I suppose Amazon and Google are huge success stories. Yahoo! probably does alright, too. ;)
As for ebay's success, they cornered the market for online auctioning early and capitalized on it. There are now other online auction companies starting to make sme headway, but ebay is so firmly established and has such a massive user base that their continued success seems likely, provided they continue to offer all the services of their competitors. Much of their money comes from various fees on the site... a seller pays listing and selling fees, plus various other fees depending on what options are chosen. With as many users as ebay has, that amounts to huge amounts of cash very quickly.

eBay became successful because of it's large choice of items. also most of it's low prices.
You can find alot of items on eBay so people would rather go there then a place where there is only a 10% chance they would find what they're looking for!
that's why eBay is so successful!

Offer goods at competitive if not the best price, and focus on after-sales service. That alone will get you where you want to go. The major difficulty is finding a stable supplier, being able to offer goods at the best price, and at all times maintaining satisfied customers. We're over 3,300 feedback this year alone, and it wouldn't be possible without the customers being happy.

eBay's success lied it its own complete system consisting of auctioning, receipts and payments, while other companies have only the auction facility and receipt and payment system depends either on exposure of buyer's credit cards or the other institutions dealing in electronic transaction.
