Well its quite far, though I can't tell you the exact distance. Currently there is no bridge connecting Kanyakumari and sri lanka, but there has been a mention about it in 'Ramayana' where Rama with his crew built a bridge with rocks.
In fact sometime back i got a chance to look at Nasa pictures which look like a rock bridge submersed in the water, between the two places.

It is not that far. There used to be a ferry from India to Sri Lanka; but anyone would be foolish to go to North Sri Lanka today. Sri Lanki is fighting a war with the Tamil Tigers who live in the North. A Westerner or anyone would be putting their life in jeopardy to travel there. If one must go to Sri Lanka fly to Columbo.
The person says he crossed Adam's Bridge has had too many 'bong lassies'..it's not a man made bride but a chain of reefs, sandbanks, and inlets that almost link India and Sri Lanka. An no you can not cross it. It was discovered by Nasa recently and appears to have been formed 1,750,000 years ago.

No their is no bridge linking srilanka and kanyakumari but their is a bridge linking srilanka and rameswaram known as Adam's bridge. From kanyakumari you could reach srilanka in probably one hour.
