Away to look at it, is that america was started by different countires, of which at the time all had monarchies. Some king in some country ruled some part of the new Land, example Napoleon sold land to the new america as the King of france ( The Lousiana Purchase), the King of england sent troops here to fight against the colonists to keep order and everything for England AKA The American Revolution..

Here is where the ROMANS come in. In American infancy, the people had the revolution due to being controlled by a king, and having no say in what was going on in their own country, they wanted to be able to choose their way of life instead of having a single person the King of england tell them what to do.

Over 1000 years before America, the Romans had already demonstrated that a government made up of the people could function and operate better than 1 person ruling everything. The Romans had Emperors but they also had to Obey to the Senate as well, and would rule on issues brought up to the Senate.

The Emperors role in US Politics became the president, and is elected by the people and not given the role of making final decisions by being born into a certain family.

The senate pretty much has the same function in Rome as it does in America, deciding on what to do with certain issues, and then bringing them up to the President for Final approval.

Due to the extreme size of Rome, the Romans knew they could not control everything just on telling people what to do, the Senate was made up of people that lived in the vast areas and cultures that were in the Roman empire, and the issues from the regions were brought to the entire senate to make decisions to keep the empire together, and to keep it growing. The Issues in Northern England during the roman empire were not the same issues in the region of Gaul (now known as France) so the same policies that were in place for one area was not good for another.

The same principle as above is just like our senate, 2 "senators" from each state are used, because the same issues in Florida, are not the same issues in Oregon, and this way all issues from the entire governed population can be brought to gether at the same place and discussed.

Kind of long but I hope it helps with the concept.

1- They sanctioned and legalized the use of physical force only to the government.
2- Praetorians, who are group of people who control the country and the rule in case of power vacuum or imbalance. These can be found now working as self-appointed power individuals or organizations of common interest, the work mainly in the executive branch.
3- The Emperor, i.e. the president, who is now publicly elected to later be steered by Praetorians.

Note that republics are not democracies, but the former can use democratic means to reach the power, a republic is just an enhanced form of tribal leadership. While a democracy is Utopian as it's virtually impossible to engage all the citizens in governing a country on daily basis, some of them are busy making a living and others are busy contemplating looting or controlling others homework. Success only comes from the goodwill anticipated through a statesman.
