Great Odin's Raven there are some stupid people on Yahoo answers!
Not you Alan, all you are asking for is a bit of respect and that people are polite.
My German teacher drummed it into us that manners dont cost anything.
I worked in a shop for 3 years and know exactly what you are talking about, some people are just plain rude.

They are either stupid or rude. They seem to think that having manners is a sign of weakness.
As a customer, I regularly experience similar discourteous behaviour from a lady who serves behind the newspaper/cigarette counter of a well known supermarket. She never puts the change into your waiting hand. Worse than that, she doesn't even look at you whilst she is serving you. Her eyes have already fallen onto the next customer when she slams the change down on the counter.
She will also think nothing of keeping you waiting whilst she engages in some non customer related task, such as counting money etc.
Also, as a man I find it very difficult to pick up five pence pieces.
So, I totally agree with you and, it slows down the process of serving customers and it puts you in a bad mood.
Ps. I have just noticed that cretinous comment from mpltmiller

That happens all the time! People are rude. The one thing to keep in mind is to not take it personally. People have a habit of taking things out on people, and working in a store sometimes puts you in the line of fire! Just remember how you would like to be treated when at work, and treat other cashiers/employees that way when you are shopping!

i agree with you, its rude and not answering thats even ruder, but i would say just smile its easier said than done, but after some time you will get used to it, remember its you who will develop high blood pressure if you let these unmannerd people get you down,i dont know if this suggestionwill help. you can put a small platter for the customer to put the cash into, and then pick it up from the platter instead putting your hand forward,

Don't take these things personally although you are the one standing across from these people. You are obviously not dealing with a very refined or classy bunch-that's such a reflection on them. But don't ever stoop to their level although it's hard-just smile and show them how a person with actual class and character does behave.

It would be nice for people to treat you the way you treat them.
But the public are just not like that anymore and I don't know why.
I was always taught, manners cost nothing so use them.
What a shame the public don't, I am with you it is so irritating.

I always greet staff and say please and thank you. I do tend to put money on the counter if it's not notes though. I don't intend for it to be rude I just do it so that it's easier to count for both parties and so that there's no risk of the coins getting dropped in the exchange.

The good news is there still are persons shining with his/her manners and one of them is you. Don't lose it. You can somehow enlighten some person's day by smiling and being nice to him...genuinely. And you can have yourself lighthearted cheering someone. So just ignore these irritation worries and maintain this happy, light feeling of worry-free! Good Luck!
