America has way to many choices. The Major 4 American football, Baseball, Basketball, Hockey. Plus college level versions of the big four. Then you have the other niche sports Golf, Auto Racing and xtream sports. Just not enough room.

Not only do the American people have a short attention span, but they also crave something more. Americans need constant stimulation and violence, which would point to why NFL Football is so popular. Soccer has action, but frankly, it is boring. That's coming from an American.

Reasons why NFL football is popular in the US:
1.American football involves way more strategy and game-planning than soccer does.
2.American football is better suited to television.
3.American football has more scoring and has put rules in place to discourage tie games.
Also, soccer has allowed hooliganism to attach itself to the sport and a lot of fans are drawn to it because of the gang warfare that goes on in the stands and outside the stadiums, which accounts for a portion of its international fan base. American football doesn't have that "advantage."

I think it is because in the USA it is treated as a kids game. We sign our kids up for soccer mostly to get them involved in something where their lack of skill (and the lower levels) is not as obvious in other sports.
Many parents who sign their kids up for the other major sports (baseball, football, basketball and hockey) do it with the hopes of at least a college scholarship and maybe prospects of being pro. Some parents do this also to re-live their potential through their kids.
Just my theory.

Maybe American football is more of a contact game and *** grabbing. Football isn`t called soccer but they are spelled so close and sound so much alike, I don`t know that`s just my guess, I don`t get into sports that much.

America, has other favorite pastimes, Baseball, American Football, the list goes on and fine athletes to boot. The competition is spread right across the entertainment industry which other genres and therefore it is hard for other sports that have not been affiliated with the America psyche to gain a foothold, and consequently they struggle.

My first wife used to play on the American Women's team and she had this theory. She felt it was because there are no time outs and I believe only 1 break through an entire game. Not enough time for commercials if broadcast on television thereby never getting much attention.

well we already have a thing we call football, and also americans have bad attention spans. We can't watch a sport that we don't see progression and points scored in. We hate hockey and soccer. At least in basebal you have strikeouts, men on base or great catches or stolen bases without having any runs scored. Thanks,
Matt

I don't think it has anything to do with the game itself. Soccer was always perceived as a European sport in America. People didn't like it because it WASN"T AMERICAN. Period.
The names for the sports just happened that way. Too late to change it now, we'll just have to suffer!
