Well it depends on where you live in America because people in California have a different accent than people in New York, Florida, Georgia, etc...because he is from the south that is where his accent is from. He's not stupid nor does he have a low iq just his speach is slow and he is very ignorant to the world unlike Jenny. It shows what talent Tom Hanks has because he can go from Forrest to the guy in The Terminal, to silly movies like The Money Pitt, My favorite is You've Got Mail with Meg Ryan. I love that movie

People with lower IQs are still people. They have the same feelings and things just like everyone else. They do not have accents unless they are from areas that have them, such as the South, New England, etc. Forrest was from Alabama and the accent is that of a southren man.

Forrest Gump is one of my favorite movies and favorite characters in a movie. Forrest had problems but he did not let his problems get him down for long. He was available to success without chasing after it.
For example, Forrest took what opportunities he had and made a life of it. When the kids at home started bullying him, he listened to his girl friend and ran. It turned out that he was really good at running, so he not only got away from trouble, but he had a healthy life style.
They let him in the Army because the Army would take anyone during the Vietnam War, just like today. And he excelled by virtue or his virtuous nature and strong legs.
His love for other people allowed him to make friends, and he never forgot them, even when his friend was killed in the War. As a result, he became a self made man, a success, and he helped others including his former Army Squad Leader.
I loved that movie.
Because his mother taught him to never give up on himself. Also, he was loved as a kid which is the one of the major keys to having a good life. Although Forrest was challenged in terms of his innate intelligence his mother taught him to have confidence in himself, he learned to compensated for his short comings and accept himself as a good and worthy person.
"Stupid is as stupid does."
Thanks for asking.

It is an Alabama Accent with inflections to make him sound like is naive, childlike. He is not mentally challenged. That was the point of the movie. As for his IQ, the character graduates college and excells in everything he does. It is hard to believe that he has a low IQ.

Tom Hanks is an actor portraying a southern character. His vision of the south is a little over the top as not all of us are so dawdling in our responses. I have lived in the southern United States for many years and refuse to use the term "y'all" because it sounds so uneducated.

I would attribute his accent to being from Alabama - Tom Hanks did an outstanding job of portraying a character of limited mental ability without being condescending.
