Outside of Miami, '06 Finals marked by controversy

DALLAS -- Give Miami credit for winning a championship. The Heat reversed the course of their season, then the course of the Finals.

However, it will always be remembered as a title soaked in controversy, and the conspiracy theorists got a little more fodder with 26.2 seconds remaining in Game 6, when Dirk Nowitzki was whistled for fouling Dwyane Wade on a drive. Wade went out of his way to initiate contact, something he normally does and normally gets.

He didn't draw any contact at the end of Game 5. Replays have shown as much. On this particular drive, which resulted in two made free throws for Wade and a three-point lead for the Heat, it was Wade who stuck out his elbow. Plain and simple.

Two superstars, one call to be made. The difference between the Mavericks and Heat, one could argue, was the referees' judgment in granting Wade his superstar calls

and not offering Nowitzki the same luxury.

The fans that stayed to watch Miami's coronation drowned out David Stern's championship presentation with boos. The home fans backed their owner, Mark Cuban, who was fined $250,000 for actions following Game 5, though he denies saying the league is fixed.

Conspiracy theorists will say there was no way Stern wanted to present Cuban the trophy. Mickey Arison, Miami's owner, keeps his name "in the business pages," according to Pat Riley.

Considering how many saw Arison's face for the first time, you know Riley isn't lying.

It's a shame this championship is going to be tempered by conspiracy because it truly was a remarkable series.

Anyone outside of Miami knows what really happened. Can you deal with it Miami fans? You were given a trophy, your team didn't earn it. Everyone thinks so but you.

Great post bill_r. Not only that Riley said he only packed one tie, one suit because he knew they were winning in Game 6. Isn't that a little over confident to only pack one pair of clothes? What if Dallas won the game?

Miami deserves nothing, this is like a bad wrestling angle where the boss is trying to screw with a wrestler, in this case an Owner and a team.

I don't agree with many calls that was made against the Mavericks in games 5 and 6 . I personally am not impressed with Wade at all if they gave Dirk the same number of free throws they gave Wade, the Mavs would be the champions today. Miami did play hard and they won and you can say what if a million times but the fact remains the same. Dallas is a great team and though they were wronged they will come back next year better than before.Maybe then the NBA will have better officials in the finals compared to the ones that was there this year. A game must be played equal with all respect championship must be earned not given .

i am sorry that you and dallas fans like you are so full of crap. the game was won from the end of the first half to the end by miami. the only thing your excuses are doing is putting down the mavs who worked hard all year and made it his far. instead of running off at the mouth about the refs give the mavs credit for what they did. the heat mon 4 in a row and desereve the trophy the boos only showed how imature the fans of dallas are. even your owner coach and players stated that it was a fair game drop the complaining and go congradulate your team.

The real truth about what happened in the NBA Finals, can Miami Heat fans accept a trophy given to them?

you lost get over it shut up and if you dont like the nba dont watch end of story. the refs called a great series i did not care who won but after cubans outburst in game 5 i went for the heat. also your star player injured a 63 year old by kicking a ball that hit them in the head. he has not even said he was soory for that. so what kind of fans and players are you. next ime our youth has violence and break your rules take a long hard look in the mirror at the crap all of you do. if dallas is this bad of a city the nba should remove the mavricks how would you like that. maybe then you will shut up and let the players play and not try to start all this controversy. By the way he missed both freethrows so it did not even matter may have even helped ot stop the clock.

I'm a huge Wade fan, but the referees made sure that in games 5 and 6 he could od no wrong. The foul on Dirk late the games 5 and 6 were not the only he calls he got. The last 2 games he shot 40+ free throws. I understand some players get the calls, but he seemed to always get the call. Dwayne Wade is great, but is he really "THAT" great? The refs were treating him like MJ just walked onto the court.

It is not a conspiracy AGAINST Dallas. It is a long time 'conspiracy' to make the superstars even better. Jordan was the beneficiary of many, many generous calls and on the defensive end non-calls. As a Lakers fan I will admit that Shaq & Kobe were both also beneficiaries of this.

Is it intentional? I don't know. Hard to argue against it when it happens year in and year out. It has gotten really bad since the Bulls title. The end of the Showtime Lakers and the Bird-era Celtics marked the end of an exciting to watch NBA era. Now the NBA has to promote the superstars instead of great team basketball and as a result the league cannot afford to have the superstars fouling out or not scoring often on spectacular plays.

Conspiracy against Dallas? I don't think so, personally. Conspiracy the benefits superstars...a different set of rules for superstars? I think so.

Can Miami accept the trophy, when Wade is the one who won it? When one man carries the whole team, is it still a team? Especially when his theatrics get him to the free throw line time and time again...when tape is reviewed and it seems calls should have been reversed?
The Mavs are poor sports? Wouldn't you be if you lost an NBA championship for fouls that didn't happen? Congratulations Miami, Wade won you guys a trophy and your title will be forever tainted by bad officiating and the theatrics of your MVP.
don't worry, we'll take it next year once Dirk takes some theatre classes.

Go Mavs!

Of course Miami fans can and should accept the championship that the Heat just won. The Heat earned the championship. They deserve it. The championship shouldn't be covered with controversies just because some fans of the opposing team are questioning the validity of the calls and the decisions that were made. Basketball is a game that runs for 48 minutes. A single 'controversial' call shouldn't make a championship and a remarkable playoff run a fraud.

OMG. You are such a sore loser. Look accept the fact that Miami won. They played an awsome game. Dallas got beat four games in a row!!!! Get over it! There might be some a bad call BUT one bad call will not win a championship!!! Heat deserves to win because they just did awsome not because of "conspiracy"!!! They were losing 2-0 and then managed to win 4-2!! So was there conspiracy in all four of those games??? NO as I said before you cant win a championship with a one or two bad calls!!

Thats legitimate, but dallas has always had trouble with defense. They were up 2 games. Dallas lost basically because they still need a better defensive playnig team. Miami shooting percentage was i think 44percent for the series. Dallas 38 percent, just sounds like to me mavs played no d. And i'll except dallsa giving the heat the trophy because they played no d

As a Mavs fan, I have some problems with the officiating in the last 2 games. That being said, from halfway thru the 4th quarter of game 3, the mavericks shot under 40% the rest of the way...and they could not stop Dwayne Wade at all. Miami deserved to win. Congratulations.

I am especially happy for ZO, Alonzo Mourning....a great person and player and after all he's been thru and with his performance, he deserves his ring.

i'm a warmth fan too yet do not imagine that the Bulls do not have a chance to get handed the nice and cozy temperature. They, the picture of the nice and cozy temperature, are more advantageous effective than very last three hundred and sixty 5 days. the nice and cozy temperature has been suffering at present and the Bulls were rolling. It wasn't particularly them triumphing that makes me imagine that they could come out of the East, that is how they're triumphing. Derrick Rose has been out for a even as and they nevertheless take care of to win video games. i pick the nice and cozy temperature to make it to the Finals so undesirable so LeBron can get that ring. absolutely everyone's on the nice and cozy temperature whose call's no longer LeBron or Dwyane has to step their sport up contained in the playoffs. in the experience that they pick it, they're gonna ought to artwork they look a** off.
