It is all about context. In a larger context starting a new job is trivial. It is when you focus on those few initial minutes...everything gets blown out of proportion. I find it always helps to sit back and look at current events as though from a distance.
Doesn't work for you?
OK, how about worst-case-scenario. Imagine the worst happens. What are the consequences? By the time you are out there interviewing you'll get a feel for how easy it is to get a job in your area. Once you get your 2nd offer, you should be seeing that you always have options available to you. The thinking here is that if the worst happens on that job...you can always walk away and take a different one; yet another fresh start.
Still not working?
Make a little card that says:
1. Take a deep breath.
2. Smile.
3. LISTEN INTENTLY.
Force yourself to look at that card once a minute. If you do NOTHING else your first day but these three things, you'll do great.

Keep in mind that you have a much better chance at getting hired if you exude self confidence. Never let them see you sweat. Keep reminding yourself that every person working has had to get through an interview first. Tell yourself over and over that you are the best person for this job and that you will love and it and you know you will get it. Remember once you do get a new job and you go for your first day that the more nervous you are about it, the less you will be able to take in and in all new jobs there is a lot to learn. You'll be fine!

Be yourself and be honest with potential employers. Don't fudge on your qualifications, but you can put a good spin on things. Honestly my best advice for you though is to fake confidence. Try to be as outgoing as possible and you'll start to believe it. Plus everyone that you meet with and work with will take you more seriously. Always portray confidence in front of customers or clients, this will look good to your bosses, even if you have to ask questions behind the scenes. Before you go into any situation play it through in your head. Think about how you'd like things to go and then make it happen. This will help you feel prepared and give you something to focus on other than nerves.

I think the best advice is to breathe. That is, take a deep breath. You were hired for a reason, so keep that in mind. Learn your job. Learn people's names. And make a friend.
Smile, enjoy it. Work hard. Learn all you can... about your duties, your company, your co-workers. Do not be afraid to ask questions. Be sure to listen to the answers.
And remember EVERYONE working there had a first day, a first week and a first month, none of which were particularly easy.
Again... breathe. Relax.

make a friend and quick!!!! it really helps to find a friend within the first week! admit that you don't know what to do but be ready and willing to learn. be friendly and go out of your way to help others... and remember you are there for 8-12 hours a day it's not your life it's only your job ..just be your self!

dress to impress & take a deep breath before you go in. They hired you because they were impressed with your CV so go in & show them what you can do!!!
Make sure you get a decent's nights sleep before hand as if you go in feeling good about yourself then you are more likely to cope with whatever comes your way. Good luck!

Sounds like you have feelings of inadequacy. You need to get over that. Once you get there, you'll probably spend most of your time doing paper work, so don't fret. However, chatting on Y! Answers on your first day may get you fired.

No employer expects you to do too much on your first day. If they do you're working for the wrong one.
They'll be just as nervous as you but they won't show it.
And if they give you problems, tell them you'll sue the sh*t out of them for sexual harassment.
